About us

The Bromham Millers is a Community Interest Company (a CIC) – that is, a company with extra features. For example, our aim is to run a business to benefit the community, not for private profit. An official regulator checks on the CIC and ensures that it fulfils this stated aim.

The owners of The Bromham Millers CIC are Bedford Mencap, Mencap and the local authority. Our supporters include professional and expert advisers and partners. We are keen to recruit volunteers and executives seconded from businesses, and private, voluntary and public organisations in our catchment.

Our business strategy is robust; it’s been checked over and approved several times over the past three years by some of the country’s leading experts in the planning and development of this type of new social enterprise. They’re satisfied that we’ve mitigated the risks, and have effective contingency plans to cope with uncertain economic conditions and unexpected shifts in demand, prices and costs.

Our main board is listed below. Some directors are yet to be appointed. Our on-site team will include full-time general, marketing, finance and operations managers, with experts in crafts and trades, team leaders, support staff and volunteers.

Company Registration No: 06421597; Company Secretary: John Thelwall, Registered Office: 1 Lurke Street, Bedford, MK40 3NT.

Bedford Mencap is a registered charity (No 218689) affiliated to Mencap and is one of the most innovative of local societies for people with learning disabilities and their families and carers. Among the pioneering iniatives started by Mencap over the past half century are a welfare visitors' service (now run as Signpost Volunteers), a summer play scheme, Marlins (a swimming and canoeing club) and a social enterprise, Beds Garden Carers (BGC). The Bromham Millers will work closely with BGC and build up their experience of providing training, work experience and jobs to people with learning disabilities.
